DIRECTOR`S STATEMENT
When my father told me he had chronic insomnia, my first reaction was to feel and show compassion for the difficult time he was going through. However, contrary to expectations, he told me I didn't have to worry about him because during those nights when he didn't sleep at bedtime, there was no despair, tiredness, or suffering. He explained that he didn't sleep because he was living his life peacefully at night, when everyone else was asleep. I then remembered José Laurencio Silva, a character in "The General in His Labyrinth," and I associated my father's situation with his own; the character who slept during the day and worked at night, fearing that he, like several members of his family, would go blind. Similarly, my father not only suffered from insomnia, but, living his new nocturnal life, he was learning to live in the darkness.
